Refuse Burner Assortments
Refuse burners, known colloquially as the wigwam burner or teepee burner, were used to dispose of waste materials produced in the wood products manufacturing industry. Their use was discontinued in the early 1970s, due to the passage of the federal clean air act of 1970 and the increased use of former waste materials in the manufacturing process. These burners, once beacons for lumber towns, are slowly disappearing from the landscape. To many who are old enough to have seen these burners in use, the removal of these burners symbolizes the demise of a simpler way of life. These remaining burners represent the heritage of the former lumber towns and the people who lived and worked in them during that time. Many small towns seem to be reluctant to let go of their past. In many instances, these burners are the only visible sign that a lumber mill was present in that town.
